Akram Zaatari: Uncovering The Things We Have Concealed
Film Screening with Artist in Attendance: This Day [2003]
New American Art Union
922 SE Ankeny St, Portland, OR
web.reed.edu/gallery/
Cinema Project, Portland, Oregon, and the Douglas F. Cooley Memorial Art Gallery, Reed College are proud to co-present an evening with Lebanese artist and curator Akram Zaatari. Akram has created more than 30 videos and installations and is one of the founding members of the Arab Image Foundation—a Beirut-based organization that aims to promote photography in the Middle East and North Africa by locating, collecting, and preserving the region's photographic heritage. With that, much of Akram's video work is centered on examining the role of photographic representation. Through collecting and archiving images from his country, Akram focuses on historical issues relating to the Lebanese Civil Wars, resistance to and mediation of these conflicts, and male sexuality. Akram's recent feature length documentary This Day uses as its starting point archival images, from portraits of Bedouins in the desert to war-era Beirut, to ruminate on the role of the photograph's ability to convey truth.

Upgrade! Seattle is a once a month event for new media artists working in the Seattle area. Every second Thursday of each month, Upgrade! Seattle invites artists/curators/thinkers/everyone to gather at 911 Media Arts Center to see and critically discuss new media work. Upgrade! Seattle is hosted by the 911 artists2artists group and is affiliated with the Upgrade! International network. Caleb Larsen will talk about his recent and current projects. Revolving around two central concepts, Language and Mapping, Larsen's current point of inspection creates intersections of digital and physical cultures by reinterpreting online information and community based websites. He is working on a suite of projects that use Google News headlines. The headlines are processed in realtime and produce simultaneous outcomes ranging from bizarre video montages to large generated associative word drawings. Seattle resident Brett Walker will also give a brief performative lecture on the use of life experiences as a mediator for his work. His artistic output encompasses a broad range of mediums, including enormous amounts of film and video work, photography, and paper-based explorations dealing with note-taking and reading.

VJ Night with guest VJ Yuba
911 Media Arts Center
402 9th Ave N, Seattle WA
www.911media.org
Half social, half showcase, the VJ Night is both a regular meeting point for VJs, DJs, and everyone who is fascinated by this highly artistic medium and a showcase of some of the best work of local talents. VJing as an emerging art form has yet to find a home in Seattle (in the U.S. as a matter of fact) outside the regular club scene, and we have set out to change that. Every month we invite local artists to share their work and talk about their craft—what they do, why they do it, and how they do it. We are excited to provide a forum for audiovisual creatives to meet, share, and enjoy the art of VJing. The VJ Night is held every third Thursday of every month.
