Reed's Cooley reopens August 29 with a film-based installation by British artist Sutapa Biswas. "Birdsong" comes to the Cooley in conjunction with the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art 2006 Time-Based Art Festival (TBA:06). Biswas will be in residence in Portland to discuss her work, give a special public performance, and screen a selection of her films. Details for these special events will be released soon. SuttonBeresCuller: "If These Walls..." Revelation

On Thursday, June 22 at 7pm, SuttonBeresCuller entered a 32ft x 32ft x 12ft box in the Installation Space of Lawrimore Project. For three weeks the artists will work in the box. Spectators will be able to hear the artists building their exhibition, but will not be able to see what it is they are working on. Even the gallery itself does not know what it is the artists are making. On July 13 at 7pm, the walls come down, revealing the product(s) of their labor. The exhibition will continue for an additional three weeks after the revelation.

Grass Routes: An Evening Arts Festival
The Washington State Department of Transportation has proposed an expansion of Highway 520 with accompanying exit/on-ramps that impact the Washington Park Arboretum, sacred Duwamish tribe land on Foster Island and an entire conservation/archaeological zone. Grass Routes has orchestrated an evening of multi-disciplinary presentations by well known Northwest artists who will explore the impact of this expansion upon the environment through their individual disciplines of theater, music, dance, performance and art installation. The Festival will begin with a welcome by the Honorable Cecile Hansen who founded the Duwamish tribe's language and dance group T'ilibshudub, followed installations, performances, and readings by Nancy Rawles, Robin Holcomb, Buster Simpson, Mark Johnson, Eduardo Calderón, Victoria Haven, and Nicole Kistler. Entry tickets are a donation range of $5 to $20 and can be obtained from www.grassroutesarts.org or on the evening of the event at either of the two starting points, the Museum of History and Industry, 2700 24th Avenue East, or the Washington Park Arboretum, 2300 Arboretum Drive East, Seattle, WA.

Rene Senos describes her work with Maya Lin and the Confluence Project and discusses how key concepts like ecological restoration, indigenous forms, languages, interpretation, and artworks convey the landscape condition and cultures encountered by Lewis and Clark. The project's variety of locations, topographies, and cultural stories provides a remarkable landscape context for understanding the river as a common thread connecting us to place. Event is $5 for general admission, $3 for members, and free for students.

Architect Jim Olson of Seattle-based Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects is widely known for his ability to create environments for art. He is sought after by collectors for his masterful use of light, space, and proportion. His recently completed Ebsworth residence frames one of our country's finest collections of 20th Century American Art. Olson will discuss his design philosophy and creative process as it relates to the Ebsworth project, the subject of the new book, Art & Architecture: The Ebsworth Collection and Residence, from William Stout Publishers. Please join us May 11 at 5:00 p.m. at the Cooley Gallery and then at 6:30 p.m. in the Reed Student Union for an evening of gelastic puppetry and psychic geography in conjunction with the exhibition New Trajectories II, recent photography from the Ovitz Family Collection, Los Angeles. This expeditionary evening begins with Portland authors Matthew Stadler and Jon Raymond reading their collaborative work "23 Propositions on the West Hills." Followed by the Dim Sum Puppet Opera Company's original commission, Monkey Wreaks Havoc in Suburbia or The Journey to the West Hills. The evening continues with a blowout performance by the posi-dance-core rockers Show Me the Pink. This event is presented by the Public Speakers in collaboration with the Douglas F. Stephen Dow Beckham, one of the nation's preeminent scholars on Lewis and Clark, will present his lecture "The Lewis and Clark Expedition: America's Commitment to the Enlightenment." The lecture will focus on how the Corps of Discovery expedition was shaped by Thomas Jefferson's intellectual interests and vision, his scientific and cultural goals, and the library that Lewis and Clark carried across North America. He will discuss the ramifications of the expedition's explorations and subsequent publications, liberally illustrated with historic and color images. Co-sponsored by the Confluence Project. Entry fees: $8 general admission, $6 member admission, and FREE for students.
